Understanding the gap with Mercedes
Matteo Bobbi discussed Ferrari’s initial outings in his video. The Maranello team showed strong competitiveness in both Australia and China. Bobbi mentioned that within the paddock, Ferrari is considered “the best car, alongside Mercedes”.
The gap between the two teams mainly stems from a lack of power. According to Bobbi, this wasn’t a new revelation for Ferrari: “They have a significant power deficit compared to Mercedes. This was known even before the first day of shakedown in Barcelona,” he explained.
The Sky Sport F1 commentator added, “Ferrari was fully aware this winter, following some early conceptual decisions about their Power Unit, that it would be at a disadvantage versus Mercedes and other rivals in terms of the ICE, the internal combustion engine.”
Because of this awareness, Ferrari already has a new engine running on the bench. Bobbi noted: “The new engine is already turning on the test bench, featuring conceptual and structural differences. Ferrari hopes this will help close the gap to Mercedes when the time comes.”
Ferrari holds second position
Despite the power shortfall, Ferrari confirmed its role as the second force in China as well. Bobbi observed: “Ferrari is clearly the second strongest team. They rank second in engine performance, tire management, and chassis development. In fact, their chassis is very close to Mercedes.”
